Egyptian mint lemonade, known as “laymun bil nahnah,” is one of the most iconic and refreshing drinks in Egypt. It’s a vibrant blend of bright citrus, fresh mint, and natural sweetness that instantly cools you down—especially during the hot summer months. Unlike regular lemonade, this version combines whole limes, fragrant mint leaves, and freshly peeled lemons, creating a bold, zesty flavor with a cooling herbal finish. Simple, uplifting, and incredibly delicious, it’s a staple in Egyptian homes and a must-try for anyone who loves fresh, invigorating drinks.
Ingredients
8 limes
2 lemons
1 ounce fresh mint leaves
½ cup sugar
6 cups water
ice cubes
Instructions
Prepare the Ingredients
Start by washing 8 whole limes in water mixed with baking soda to remove any inpurities from the skin. Slice the limes into quarters and keep the skin on to capture the lime zest. Next, completely peel the skin off two lemons. Lemons have more of the bitter white pith, while limes have less, and their zest is essential to this drink’s flavor. To prepare the mint, simply pull the leaves off the stems.
Blend the Mint Lemonade
Add the limes to a blender along with the peeled lemons, 1 ounce fresh mint leaves, 1/2 cup sugar, and four cups of water. Blend for about 10 seconds, then pause, Blend again for another 10 seconds until combined. Be careful not to over blend, as this can release too much pith and make the drink bitter.
Strain and Adjust
Pour the mixture through a strainer to catch the pulp and any bits of pith, creating a smoother, cleaner drink. Add about two more cups of cold water since the mixture will still be strong. Taste again and adjust the water and sugar to your preference.
Serve
Serve the “laymun bil nahnah” over plenty of ice for the ultimate refreshing experience. This chilled Egyptian mint lemonade is best enjoyed immediately for maximum freshness and flavor.
