Egyptian Fenugreek Tea | Helba

Fenugreek tea, known in Egypt as helba, is one of the most comforting and traditional hot drinks in Egyptian culture. It’s earthy, soothing, and packed with natural benefits. Helba is especially loved during the colder months, after meals, or whenever someone needs something warm and gentle on the stomach. Its naturally nutty aroma fills the kitchen as it boils, bringing a sense of nostalgia to many Egyptian homes. Whether you’re making it for relaxation, digestion, or simply for the taste of home, this simple recipe brings that classic Egyptian comfort right to your cup.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon fenugreek seeds, washed

  • 16 ounces water

  • honey (optional)

  • sugar (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Fenugreek Seeds

Before cooking, start with whole fenugreek seeds. Place them in a bowl and wash them thoroughly under cold water to remove any dust or impurities. This helps keep the flavor clean and prevents any bitterness from lingering in the final cup. After washing, drain the water completely so the seeds are ready for boiling.

Boil the Fenugreek Seeds

In a small pot, add the washed fenugreek seeds along with fresh water. Place the pot over medium-high heat and bring it to a full boil. Important: only allow the mixture to boil for one minute. Fenugreek seeds release color and flavor very quickly — boiling them for longer will darken the tea and make it taste noticeably bitter. One minute is the sweet spot for a smooth, golden, balanced cup.

Strain and Pour

Once the minute is up, remove the pot from the heat. Place a strainer over your cup and pour the tea through it, catching all the fenugreek seeds. You should now have a hot, clear, golden-colored helba ready to enjoy.

Sweeten to Taste

ree

Traditionally, Egyptians like to add a touch of sweetness. Squeeze in a splash of honey or stir in sugar — it’s completely up to your preference. Honey gives it a warm, floral sweetness, while sugar keeps the flavor more classic and simple.

Sip it while it’s hot for the most comforting experience. This soothing drink is perfect on a cold day, when you’re under the weather, or simply when you want a taste of home.
