Egyptian khoshaf is a refreshing and naturally sweet dessert drink made with dried fruits soaked in milk or water. This simple yet flavorful recipe combines dates, dried apricots, and golden raisins to create a drinkable treat that’s both nourishing and satisfying. Topped with a mix of nuts and coconut, khoshaf is a popular choice for Ramadan, offering a light and energizing snack after a day of fasting. Its versatility as a vegan-friendly and customizable dish makes it a timeless favorite in Egyptian households.
Ingredients
For the Khoshaf:
3 dates
6 dried apricots
golden raisins
1 cup milk or 1 cup water
For Garnish:
toasted almond slices
shredded coconut
pistachios
Instructions
Prepare the Dates
Start this recipe with fresh dates. Remove the seeds and slice the dates into small, bite-size pieces.
Combine the Ingredients
Add the chopped dates to a cup along with dried apricots and golden raisins. Pour in a splash of milk to begin soaking the fruit. If you are lactose intolerant, you can use water instead.
Chill and Soak
Cover and place the mixture in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours, allowing the dried fruit to soften and naturally sweeten the liquid.
Garnish and Serve
Once chilled, remove from the refrigerator and garnish with toasted nuts and coconut. Serve cold — it’s the perfect late-night snack to enjoy during the month of Ramadan.
Ramadan Tip
Khoshaf makes an ideal late-night treat during Ramadan. For the best flavor, prepare it in the early morning hours before dawn and let it chill in the refrigerator throughout the day. By sunset, your khoshaf will be perfectly infused, refreshingly cool, and ready to enjoy after breaking your fast.
