The Origin of “Okay, khalas!”™
“Okay, khalas!” was born from a playful response to the anticipated negativity The Egyptian Cook often receives over how he prepares certain dishes. “Khalas” (خلاص), meaning enough, finished, or done depending on the context, became his way of humorously telling his critics to back off. Rather than arguing over what is or is not the “original” recipe, the phrase reflects the fact that everyone cooks differently and there is no need to fight over food. What started as a random moment of mocking the expected criticism while recording a cooking video simply felt right when yelled, eventually becoming one of The Egyptian Cook’s most recognizable catchphrases. The yelling also developed its own animated waving hand gesture, making the expression even more recognizable and entertaining for viewers. He often shouts it unexpectedly in the middle of cooking, paired with a clever comeback for comedic relief.
